Packing your hospital bag is one of those “it’s really happening!” moments. But between
scanning Pinterest lists and getting advice from Grandma, it’s easy to end up with three suitcases for a two-day stay.
As we head into 2025, hospital policies and minimalist parenting trends have shifted what essentials you actually need. Overpacking can be just as stressful as underpacking.
Whether you’re planning a C-section or a vaginal birth, this updated guide breaks down the true essentials for Mom, Baby, and Partner—so you can focus on meeting your little one, not rummaging through luggage.

1. For Mom (The Real Essentials)
Your comfort is the priority here. Think loose, accessible, and familiar.
- Toiletries Bag:
- Travel-size shampoo, conditioner, and body wash (hospital soap can be drying).
- Lip balm (hospitals are dry!).
- Hair ties or a scrunchie.
- Toothbrush & paste.
- Deodorant.
- Clothing:
- 2-3 Nursing Tanks/Bras: Even if you aren’t nursing, these are soft and
accessible. - Dark-colored Robe: Great for covering up hospital gowns while walking
the halls. - Comfortable PJ bottoms: Loose joggers or maternity leggings.
- Slippers/Socks: Hospitals floors are cold. Get ones with grip!
- Going-home Outfit: Something loose and comfortable (you’ll still look
about 6 months pregnant, which is normal!).
- 2-3 Nursing Tanks/Bras: Even if you aren’t nursing, these are soft and
- Postpartum Care:
- Most hospitals provide mesh underwear and pads, but bring a few pairs of adult
diapers (like Depends) for better comfort and leak protection. - Nipple cream.

2. For Baby (Keep It Simple)
The hospital will provide diapers, wipes, and a swaddle while you are there. You mostly need items for the trip home and photos.
- Going Home Outfit:
- One newborn size (NB) and one 0-3 month size (just in case!).
- Hat and socks/booties.
- Muslin Swaddle Blanket: Great for photos and tucking around baby in the car
seat. - Car Seat: Crucial! Learn how to install it before you go to the hospital. Install the base around week 36.
- Tip: Ensure your car seat meets current safety standards. See the NHTSA Car Seat Finder for guidance.
- Pediatrician’s Contact Info: The hospital will ask for this.
3. For the Partner / Support Person
You might be there for a while, and you need to keep your energy up!
- Snacks: Hospitals might not have food available at 3 AM. Pack protein bars,
nuts, chips, and hydration drinks. - Change of Clothes: Fresh shirt and underwear for a 2-day stay.
- Pillow/Blanket: The hospital couch is often uncomfortable. Your own pillow
makes a huge difference. - Entertainment: Book, iPad, or headphones for downtime.
4. The “Tech & Docs” Bag (Don’t Forget These!)
- Long Charging Cables: Outlets are never where you need them. Bring a 6ft+ cable
for your phone. - ID and Insurance Cards.
- Birth Plan: If you have specific preferences, bring printed copies for the
nurses. (See ACOG’s resources on labor for what to expect).
The goal is to feel prepared, not overwhelmed. Pack your bag around the 36-week mark and leave it by the door or in the car.
